About Tally Up

Built on the Isle of Man, for the Isle of Man

Our Story

Most software aimed at sole traders is built for large markets like the UK, the US, or Australia. If you're self-employed on the Isle of Man, you end up adapting tools that were never designed for you. We saw plumbers, hairdressers, personal trainers, web designers, taxi drivers and other hardworking people spending their evenings on admin instead of with their families, wrestling with spreadsheets or paying for software that didn't fit.

We started Tally Up because we thought Manx sole traders deserved better. Not a UK product with a few settings changed, but something built from the ground up for the island. Something a sole trader could pick up in minutes, not days, and that keeps a running Isle of Man tax estimate updated as you record, so you always know roughly where you stand.

We're based on the Isle of Man ourselves. We understand the frustration of juggling receipts, chasing invoices, and trying to work out how much to set aside before 6 October. That first-hand experience shapes everything we build. If a feature doesn't make a real difference to someone running a small business here, it doesn't make the cut.

We build Tally Up with the people who use it. Our Community Hub lets you suggest features, vote on what matters most, and see exactly where your ideas are in the pipeline. If something would save you time, we want to know about it.

Tally Up is deliberately focused. We are not building a full accountancy suite and we are not trying to serve every market. We are here for one audience: self-employed people on the Isle of Man. Making their income tracking, expenses, invoicing, and tax estimation as painless as possible is what we do. We sit alongside your accountant, handling the organised groundwork rather than replacing professional advice. We would rather do that well than be a tool that tries to do everything for everyone and does none of it particularly well.

Meet the Founders

D.Wade FCCA

Co-Founder

D.Wade FCCA is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants with nine years of experience working in finance and accounting. She handles the finance side of Tally Up and much of the day-to-day running of the business.

She has seen the bags of receipts, the last-minute scrambles, and the spreadsheets that almost add up. That first-hand understanding of what sole traders actually face shapes the decisions she makes about what Tally Up does and how it works.

She is the voice in the room that keeps things grounded.

Mark Wade

Co-Founder

Mark is the technical lead behind Tally Up. With a background in software engineering and financial technology, he designs and builds the platform with a focus on simplicity, security, and reliability. His goal is to make sure that sole traders who aren't tech-savvy can track their income, expenses, and tax position without a steep learning curve, and that their data is always safe and private. He is responsible for the architecture, the infrastructure, and keeping the lights on.

When they are not doing day jobs, or Tally Up, you will find them somewhere exploring the island with their daughter and Labrador, and testing gelato flavours.

Our Mission

Tally Up exists to make income tracking, expenses, and tax estimation simple for Manx sole traders. We believe self-employed people on the Isle of Man deserve tools that actually fit their needs, not generic software designed for another country. That means logging income and expenses in a few taps, snapping receipts instead of filing them, and always having a rough idea of how much to set aside for tax. No jargon, no complexity, no features you'll never use.

Our Approach to IoM Tax

The Isle of Man has its own tax system, separate from the UK. The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April, returns are filed with the Assessor of Income Tax rather than HMRC, and income tax bands and National Insurance rates are set by the Isle of Man Treasury. If you have used software built for the UK market, you have probably noticed that the rates, thresholds, and deadlines don't match what applies here.

Tally Up estimates IoM income tax, Class 2 and Class 4 National Insurance, and VAT using the correct local rates and thresholds. Most UK-focused tools use HMRC tax codes that simply don't apply here. When the Treasury publishes new rates, we update the platform so you don't need to change any settings or second-guess your figures. You can also compare what-if scenarios to see how changes in your income would affect the estimate.

Tally Up handles the April 6 to April 5 tax year automatically, including pro-rata estimates and threshold monitoring throughout the year. As you log income, your dashboard shows a running tax estimate based on what you've entered so far, so there are no surprises when the 6 October deadline comes around.
